Farm to school

Farm to School Initiative

  • FARM TO SCHOOL

  • Farm to School is a program that connects schools and local farms with the objectives of serving healthy meals in school cafeterias, improving student nutrition, providing agriculture, health and nutrition education opportunities, and supporting local and regional farmers. Creek View Elementary is a proud participant in this program.

  • The program teaches students about the path from farm to fork, and instills healthy eating habits that can last a lifetime. At the same time, use of local produce in school meals and educational activities provides a new direct market for farmers in the area and mitigates environmental impacts of transporting food long distances.

  • The Farm to School approach helps children understand where their food comes from and how their food choices impact their bodies, the environment and their communities at large. Click here to LEARN MORE.

Health & Wellness

Creating a healthy school environment is a high priority at Creek View Elementary. We agree with the Center for Disease Control, April 2010 study that suggests student academic success is directly related to physical health. A healthy body positively influences learning by increasing school attendance rates, improving classroom behavior, and encouraging a healthy self-concept. This philosophy is reinforced in various ways at Creek View.

Choose My PlateNUTRITION
A primary way that school staff and parents work together is to offer healthy foods to our students, at school and at home. The new USDA 2010 Dietary Guidelines reexamined the balance between fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and diary. These guidelines are factored into our school menus. There are no vending machines accessible to students. To help your child start their day ready to learn, make sure your child has breakfast before coming to school or eats the school breakfast available in the cafeteria. Families are encouraged to utilize the MealpayPlus online payment system for school food purchases to help parents monitor their child’s eating habits and support our healthy foods initiatives. One of our PTA’s guiding principles is to model and support healthy habits by offering nutritious food at PTA social events, providing activity-based rewards, and through family wellness events and fundraisers. We strongly encourage parents to bring healthy items for special events/activities/birthdays. Celebratory snack examples are: fruit smoothies, variety fruit kabobs, low-fat popcorn, vegetables with low-fat dip, V8 fruit juices, cheese & crackers, and frozen fruit popsicles. Due to the heighten sensitivity to peanut allergies, we ask that all parents attempt to avoid peanuts in the items they share with a class.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
In addition to our standard physical education programs, there are numerous ways that our school and PTA supports student physical activity including the:

• Modernization of the gymnasium floor

• Expansion of outdoor playground equipment used during recess

• Addition of outdoor play pads made of recycled tires to provide durable, impact-free play areas in the courtyard

• Develop walking trails developed in cooperation with the U.S. Boy Scouts

Creek View Elementary has also incorporated many of the U.S. government “Let’s Move!” initiatives to combat childhood obesity.
